How to Prepare a Yandex Direct Search Campaign with AI Before Launch

AI can organise queries, draft ads and help create a campaign. To review it before any spend begins, preparation should end with an inactive campaign and clear settings. Launch should be a separate decision.

Queries arranged into groups, with a prepared campaign inspected before a closed launch barrier

You can prepare a Yandex Direct Search campaign with AI in stages: define the offer, test the lead journey, build queries and ads, approve the settings, create an inactive campaign and read its saved state from the account. Only after that review do you decide whether to submit it for moderation and allow serving. This sequence lets you fix the wrong region, link or goal before it starts spending money.

A normal conversation with a model helps with wording but cannot confirm the advertising account’s state. An AI agent in Codex or Claude Code with a connected plugin can use website context and official APIs to inspect settings, prepare specific changes and verify authorised operations. None of these tools knows the business’s terms better than its owner until those terms have been supplied.

Define the product and the boundaries of the first launch

“Set up ads for my website” leaves too many decisions to the model. The site may contain several services, an outdated price or a form intended for a different audience. Start with one offer: what you sell, who buys it, which region you serve and what enquiry the business can handle.

Suppose a business repairs household coffee machines in Kazan. This is a hypothetical example, not a client case. For its first campaign, establish whether it offers on-site visits, which models it accepts, how pricing is determined and where customers send enquiries. Commercial machine repairs, spare-part sales and technician training may appear in neighbouring searches but attract different buyers.

  • Identify the specific service page and the offer’s confirmed terms.
  • Describe a suitable customer and the enquiries you cannot fulfil.
  • Record geography, enquiry-handling hours and capacity constraints.
  • Assign responsibility for budget approval and ad review.

Set a test budget from business economics and an acceptable loss, rather than a confident model forecast. Search volume, click cost and expected leads need sources and assumptions. If demand evidence is unavailable, the useful output is a set of hypotheses to investigate, not a spreadsheet filled with invented numbers.

Verify that a useful enquiry actually reaches the business

For the repair business, a primary goal could represent a successfully saved repair enquiry. A button click or form opening shows intent but does not prove that the business received anything. Before advertising, follow the visitor journey: open the page, submit a valid form and confirm that the enquiry reaches the system where staff handle it.

Test an unsuccessful submission and a repeated click separately. The goal should neither count a failed submission as a completed enquiry nor fire twice for one action. If the main contact route is a phone number, distinguish a telephone-link click from a completed conversation and define how the latter will be confirmed.

The counter and goal must match the advertised website and the action used for evaluation. The detailed sequence is covered in our guide to connecting Metrica, Direct and real advertising outcomes. If visitors cannot understand the offer or complete an enquiry, first fix the gap in the path to a lead.

Connect each query intent to an ad and a landing page

Separate intentions and review negative keywords

AI can help with initial grouping: repair enquiries, model-specific searches and pricing questions. These groups are a starting point for research, not evidence of demand. Each needs an identifiable intention that matches both the offer and the landing page.

For our example, “coffee machine repair Kazan” and “buy a coffee machine” need different answers. A DIY repair query may also fall outside a paid service. Excluding “repair” would remove the intention the campaign needs. Test exclusions against examples of suitable and unsuitable queries, and verify search volume using data with an explicit region, period and source.

Check the ad’s promise against the landing page

A model may suggest “free diagnosis” or “same-day repair” because those phrases sound persuasive. Use them only when the business fulfils those terms and explains them on the page. Review headlines, descriptions, sitelinks and callouts as one consistent offer.

Every link should open the right page, and the form should accept an enquiry about that service. Sending people to a general catalogue makes them find the relevant section again. Before launch, check how clearly your online storefront presents the offer.

Account for mandatory Search autotargeting

Autotargeting cannot be completely disabled in a Search Unified Performance Campaign. A keyword list therefore does not mean serving is limited to those keywords. Review the available query categories, brand settings, query examples and negative keywords. Yandex is gradually changing this interface; recheck the settings when changing placement types. The official UPC autotargeting guide describes these controls.

Treat Search preparation and expansion into the Yandex Advertising Network as separate decisions. In this workflow the campaign is prepared for Search while Network serving remains off. Additional reach needs a reason grounded in audience and measurement, rather than an attractive forecast alone.

Compare the plan with the saved inactive campaign

Approve the settings that affect spending first

Before creation, ask the agent to show the account, placements, geography, schedule, bidding strategy, budget with currency and period, counter and goals. Each group should expose its keywords, exclusions, ads and final URLs. Unknown terms belong in questions rather than silently filled assumptions.

Conversion-based bidding needs particular care: the selected goal must represent the action the business wants. Strategy selection also depends on available evidence and economics. A complete campaign does not prove that the system can already acquire customers at the desired cost.

Read the actual account state after creation

An approved plan describes what should happen. The account shows what was saved. After authorised creation, retrieve the campaign, groups, ads and targeting conditions again and compare them with the plan. “Done” without this check does not verify the result.

In the Direct API, Status=DRAFT means the campaign has not been submitted for moderation, while State=OFF means it is inactive. These fields describe different aspects of state. OFF alone proves neither completeness nor agreement with the plan. The Anilau preparation workflow verifies both fields and the created objects.

Campaign review sheet: record the actual value and mark each row “matches / needs correction”.
Review itemEvidence required
Account and productThe intended advertiser and offer are selected.
PlacementsSearch is selected; Network serving is off for this workflow.
Geography and scheduleRegions and hours match service availability and the time zone.
Strategy and budgetSettings, amount, currency and period match the approved plan.
MeasurementThe right counter and goal are selected; a test enquiry succeeds.
TargetingKeywords, exclusions and autotargeting have been checked by intent.
Ads and linksObjects exist, promises are supported and pages open correctly.
StateThe new draft is DRAFT/OFF; launch has not been performed.

If an operation stops partway through, first establish which objects already exist. Repeating the whole creation process can produce duplicates. Continue only after reconciling the account state and preparing a new plan for the remaining work.

Separate moderation from permission to serve ads

Business review, Yandex moderation and enabling delivery answer different questions. Moderation checks whether advertising materials are acceptable; it does not validate your geography, margin or future lead quality. Approval by moderators is not the owner’s decision to spend.

Before authorising launch, recheck the state, goals, spending settings, page availability and readiness to handle enquiries. Once delivery begins, review actual search queries, spend and the quality of incoming leads. Evaluate sales after allowing for the time between enquiry and payment. An inactive draft cannot provide evidence of return on ad spend.

Choose a tool or have a specialist prepare the campaign

Direct already offers its own AI assistant for Simple Start in the mobile application. If that format suits the task, it may be a useful starting point. The Anilau plugin connects product context, the website, measurement and advertising-account operations inside Codex or Claude Code. It is an independent product, not an official Yandex tool.

Anilau’s Yandex Direct Advisor helps audit the account, research keywords and prepare groups and ads. After confirmation it can create a Search UPC in DRAFT/OFF with Network serving disabled. Moderation and launch are separate, and saved state is read back. Strategy and spending decisions remain with the owner or specialist.

An example first request to the agent

Prepare a Search campaign plan for household coffee machine repairs in Kazan. Inspect the service page and current Metrica settings. Establish the terms for on-site visits, accepted models and lead confirmation. Separate search intentions and propose negative keywords, ads, links and autotargeting settings. Cite the source of demand data and turn unknowns into questions. Show the account, geography, schedule, strategy, budget and goals for approval. Do not create or launch anything yet.

After approval, separately authorise creation of the inactive campaign and request a comparison using the review sheet above. If you want a specialist to handle preparation and launch, explore the Yandex Direct setup service. A plugin purchase, advertising setup and media spend are separate costs.

A useful preparation result makes it clear who sees which offer, where the click leads, what counts as a meaningful enquiry and which settings were approved. AI speeds up assembling that chain; verification before a separate launch decision makes it manageable.

Practical decision checklist

  1. Define one offer and the suitable enquiry.
  2. Test the full path to a saved lead.
  3. Approve targeting, ads, strategy and spending settings.
  4. Read the saved draft back and decide on moderation and launch separately.
